THE WELL DISPUTE

Once there was a complaint at Emperor Akbar's court. There were two neighbours who shared a garden had a dispute. This garden had a well which was owned by Iqbal khan. His neighbour, the farmer, bought the well from Iqbal a few months ago. In spite of having sold the well, Iqbal continued to fetch water from the well. So, the farmer requested the emperor to give him justice.

"Why do you continue to draw water from the well Iqbal?" inquired the Emperor Akbar.

"Well my lord, I have sold the well to the farmer but not the water inside it!"
Puzzled by the situation, the emperor asked the Birbal to find a solution.

Birbal came forward and asked, "Iqbal you said that you had sold only the well, and the water inside is still yours, then how can you keep your water inside another person's well without paying a rent for it?"

Iqbal's trickery found its match. The farmer got his justice and Birbal his reward.
